KwaZulu-Natal is experiencing severe weather as a cold front moves across the region, bringing strong winds, heavy rainfall, and snowfall. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 4 warning for damaging winds, which will remain in effect until Wednesday morning.
The coastal areas from Port Edward to Kosi Bay are facing the most intense conditions. Authorities warn that the strong winds could cause significant sand buildup on coastal roads, disrupt port and small harbour operations, and threaten anchored vessels by dragging anchors or breaking mooring lines.
In response, disaster management teams across the province are actively addressing multiple weather-related incidents. The challenging conditions have led to precautionary road closures to protect motorists. The Department of Transport has closed several key routes, including the road between Kokstad and Pietermaritzburg and the R603 from Tacoma to Reit.
Transport officials continue to monitor major routes such as the N2 between Kokstad and Port Shepstone, the N3 corridor from Harrismith to Tugela Toll, and the R617 between Kokstad and Underberg. To manage the heavy snowfall, more than ten graders have been deployed along critical roads to clear snow and ensure faster responses to weather hazards.
Drivers are urged to take extra care when travelling. Recommended safety measures include reducing speed, increasing the distance between vehicles, using low-beam headlights in poor visibility, and staying alert for fallen trees or debris. Smooth and careful driving is essential to avoid skidding, and vehicle maintenance, particularly tyres, brakes, lights, and wipers, should be up to date.
Residents and travellers are advised to stay informed about the evolving weather conditions and to avoid unnecessary travel while these hazardous conditions persist.
