The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has forecast isolated showers and thundershowers across several provinces this week, including Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, North West, Free State, Northern Cape, and the Western Cape.
In Gauteng, wet weather is expected to persist throughout the week, with daytime temperatures remaining mild. Johannesburg is predicted to experience a 60% chance of rain and a maximum temperature of 19°C, while Pretoria can expect cloudy and cool conditions with isolated thundershowers and a high of 21°C from a minimum of 15°C on Monday.
SAWS has also issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms in KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and the Northern Cape. The alert warns of potential localised flooding, particularly in vulnerable areas, and possible damage to infrastructure, informal settlements, homes, vehicles, and livestock.
Widespread isolated to scattered showers are expected across most of the country, with the central and eastern regions likely to bear the brunt of severe storms. The unsettled weather is forecast to continue through to the weekend, though temperatures are expected to gradually improve.
This warning follows last week’s heavy rains in parts of KwaZulu-Natal, where flooding rendered several roads impassable. At least one fatality has been reported after a woman’s body was recovered from a river in Pinetown.
While Gauteng and surrounding provinces will experience consistent rainfall, no severe thunderstorms are currently expected in these regions for the week ahead.
