President Cyril Ramaphosa has confirmed that he will hold further talks with former US President Donald Trump to address the United States’ decision to grant refugee status to a group of Afrikaners.
This follows the recent departure of 49 Afrikaners to the US on a chartered flight, a move that has sparked diplomatic concern. Speaking at the Africa CEO Forum in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, Ramaphosa stated that the group does not meet the internationally accepted criteria for refugee status and dismissed claims that they are facing persecution in South Africa.
According to Ramaphosa, the individuals making such claims represent a fringe minority within the country who are resistant to transformation. He believes their departure is not rooted in any form of state-driven discrimination or hostility, but rather in opposition to the social and political changes taking place in South Africa.
He also highlighted South Africa’s inclusive approach, noting that it remains one of the few countries on the continent where former ruling minorities were not expelled post-apartheid. Instead, these groups have continued to live in the country and contribute to its progress.
The president plans to travel to the United States for further engagement on the matter, and while it’s unclear whether billionaire Elon Musk will be involved in the discussions, Ramaphosa confirmed that he would be accompanied by a South African delegation.
