Electricity supply to areas affected by last week’s severe storms in Nelson Mandela Bay is expected to be fully restored by Thursday, following the collapse of two electricity towers during gale force winds.
The incident plunged large parts of the metro’s western suburbs into darkness, with the power outage also triggering water supply disruptions that affected households, small businesses and schools.
According to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, steady progress has been made since repair work began. Emergency teams have been working around the clock to meet the municipality’s ten day restoration target.
Metro Executive Mayor Babalwa Lobishe confirmed during a site visit that all six monopoles have now been erected to replace the collapsed towers. The focus has since shifted to the installation and testing of power lines, a critical step before electricity can be safely restored to affected areas.
The municipality has apologised to residents and businesses for the prolonged disruption and has appealed for patience as final repairs are completed. Officials have assured the public that regular updates will continue to be provided as work progresses.
