Biography
Jonathan Oppenheimer is a South African businessman, social impact investor, and fourth-generation scion of the Oppenheimer business dynasty. Educated at Harrow School and Christ Church, Oxford, where he studied Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) and played first-class cricket, he began his corporate career in investment banking as an analyst at N M Rothschild & Sons in London. He subsequently joined the family business, holding senior leadership positions across Anglo American plc and De Beers Consolidated Mines for nearly two decades. His executive tenure culminated in leading De Beers' producer relations across Africa and managing key operations prior to the historic 2012 sale of the family’s 40% stake in De Beers to Anglo American for $5.1 billion, concluding 85 years of direct family control over the global diamond trade.
Following the sale, Oppenheimer pivoted toward long-term, permanent capital investment and sustainable development across Africa. In 2016, he founded Oppenheimer Partners, an investment firm focused on acquiring and developing commercial assets across the continent. He serves as Executive Chairman of Oppenheimer Generations, an umbrella group directing the family's private, commercial, and research activities, including conservation initiatives through Oppenheimer Generations Research and Conservation and Tswalu Kalahari. Additionally, he co-founded the Johannesburg-based Brenthurst Foundation in 2004 to drive policy research, economic growth, and governance reforms across African nations.
In response to the economic disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic, Oppenheimer pledged R1 billion to establish the South African Future Trust (SAFT). The initiative extended interest-free loans and direct financial preservation support to nearly 100,000 small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) employees across South Africa. He serves on the Board of Trustees for the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and continues to advocate for youth employment, entrepreneurship, and sustainable land stewardship across Africa.
