Over 120 illegal immigrants were arrested in Johannesburg on Friday morning as part of the police’s ongoing Operation Shanela.
In preparation for the festive season, Gauteng police have intensified efforts to combat crime in the city’s inner areas.
On a busy road in the heart of Johannesburg, more than 100 officers conducted vehicle inspections to ensure compliance with the law.
During the operation, officers stopped a taxi, prompting one passenger, later identified as an illegal miner, to flee when asked to produce identification documents.
Police pursued the individual, apprehended him, and transported him to a waiting police van.
Gauteng Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni emphasised the growing concern over illegal immigration in Johannesburg’s inner city.
“We are having illegal immigrants. We are also focusing on that. As for now, we have arrested 123 illegal immigrants,” Mthombeni said.
The Johannesburg Central and Hillbrow police stations are known to experience elevated crime rates during the festive season, making such operations crucial for public safety.
