JOHANNESBURG – Oscar Pistorius may spend at least 15 years in jail for the murder of Reeva Steenkamp.
That’s after the Constitutional Court denied him leave to appeal his conviction.
The court says the defence had no reasonable grounds of success.
The Olympian will now be sentenced for murder next month.
Steenkamp’s parents have reacted to the news.
Speaking through their lawyer, June and Barry Steenkamp say the law must take its course.
Pistorius shot and killed his model girlfriend three years ago.
He was found guilty of culpable homicide.
But the Supreme Court of Appeal changed his conviction to murder in December.
The NPA says it will be pushing for the minimum 15 year sentence for murder.
“The murder conviction carries a minimum of 15 years so we’ve got a responsibility as an NPA to uphold the law,” said NPA spokesman Luvuyo Mfaku.
“Of course, it will be the discretion of a judge, it is completely the discretion of the judge as to which sentence to impose but we will be pushing for the minimum sentence.”
