The 21 year old attacker has signed a four year contract with the Belgian club, with the option of a further year, after completing his medical following Bafana Bafana’s FIFA World Cup campaign.

Dream Move Becomes Reality

Mofokeng travelled directly from the United States to Belgium after South Africa’s Round of 32 exit at the World Cup to finalise the transfer, with Orlando Pirates and Union Saint Gilloise having reached an agreement before the tournament began.

Speaking after his unveiling, the former Pirates star said the move represents another major milestone in what has already been a remarkable year.

He said playing in Europe had always been a dream and expressed excitement about helping Union Saint Gilloise in their UEFA Champions League qualifying campaign while continuing his development as a player.

Mofokeng also said he hopes to compete for trophies with his new club after helping Pirates to a memorable domestic campaign.

Reward For A Standout Season

The move follows an outstanding season for Mofokeng, who played a key role in Orlando Pirates’ domestic treble.

The attacker registered 10 goals and eight assists in 27 Betway Premiership appearances as Pirates lifted the league title, MTN8 and Carling Knockout.

His impressive club form carried into the FIFA World Cup, where he emerged as one of South Africa’s standout performers despite making his tournament debut.

Williams Welcomes European Switch

Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams believes Mofokeng’s move is not only significant for the player but also for the continued growth of the national team.

Williams has repeatedly stressed the importance of South African footballers competing in Europe’s top leagues, saying more players testing themselves at the highest level will ultimately strengthen Bafana Bafana.

The goalkeeper also praised head coach Hugo Broos for placing his trust in younger players, arguing that the experience gained at major tournaments will accelerate their development.

Advice For The Next Chapter

Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Roger Feutmba believes Mofokeng has all the qualities needed to succeed in Belgium.

The former Cameroon international, who previously played in the Belgian top flight, said Mofokeng’s technical ability, football intelligence and discipline make him well suited to European football.

Feutmba dismissed concerns over the attacker’s physical stature, arguing that intelligence, movement and technical quality are just as important as size at the highest level. He urged the youngster to remain focused on his football as he adapts to a new environment.

Another Step Forward For South African Football

Mofokeng’s transfer continues a growing trend of South African players securing moves to Europe following impressive performances for both club and country.

His switch comes after a breakthrough World Cup campaign for Bafana Bafana, with Hugo Broos consistently highlighting the need for more South Africans to compete regularly in Europe’s top competitions.

As Mofokeng prepares for his first season in Belgium and the prospect of UEFA Champions League football, his move is being viewed as another encouraging sign of the growing quality and ambition within South African football.
