Match Preview

Atletico Madrid have found their rhythm after a difficult start to the campaign, winning nine of their last 10 matches in all competitions while remaining unbeaten during that run.

Diego Simeone’s side have also demonstrated impressive defensive organisation, keeping six clean sheets across those 10 fixtures. Their latest result was a 2-0 victory over Levante in LaLiga on Saturday.

The result leaves Atletico second in the Spanish top flight with 28 points after 11 matchweeks, just two behind leaders Barcelona.

Their Champions League campaign has been less convincing. Atletico opened with a 2-1 defeat against Liverpool on 9 September before recording a 2-0 victory over Manchester United on 13 October. They then played out a 1-1 draw against Stuttgart on 20 October.

However, home advantage could prove important on Tuesday. Atletico are unbeaten in six matches at the Wanda Metropolitano this season, recording five victories and one draw. They have scored 13 goals and conceded just three during those fixtures.

Bayern Munich, meanwhile, arrive in Madrid following a 2-2 draw against Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Vincent Kompany’s side remain top of the German standings with 18 points, although they are ahead of Dortmund only on goal difference.

The Bavarians have also struggled to find consistency in Europe, drawing 2-2 against Arsenal at the Allianz Arena on 21 October after a 3-3 result against Viking FK on 13 October.

Despite their domestic dominance, Bayern will be eager to make progress in a competition they have not won since the 2019/20 season.

Kompany’s availability is another concern for the visitors, with the coach reportedly recovering after collapsing during a training session in late October.

The two sides last met in December 2020, when they played out a 1-1 draw. Bayern had won their two previous encounters, recording victories of 4-0 and 1-0.

Bayern’s away form could also be a factor. They have failed to win three of their last five away matches, although they avoided defeat in all three. They scored 10 goals across those fixtures but conceded seven.

Team News

Atletico Madrid

Atletico have concerns over midfielders Johnny Cardoso and Koke, although both players have returned to training. Simeone could opt against risking either player from the start.

Pablo Barrios is expected to feature in midfield, while Julian Alvarez and Kang-In Lee are tipped to lead the attack.

Bayern Munich

Bayern will be without Luis Diaz, who is sidelined with a hamstring injury. Michael Olise is also a doubt after picking up a knee problem against Borussia Dortmund.

Serge Gnabry and Ismael Saibari reportedly sustained injuries during the same fixture, potentially leaving Kompany with limited options out wide.

Alphonso Davies and Lennart Karl could therefore feature on the flanks, while Bayern also have concerns over goalkeepers Manuel Neuer and Jonas Urbig. If neither is available, Sven Ulreich could be called upon.

Predicted Starting Line-Ups

These are projected selections, not confirmed team sheets.

Atletico Madrid: Oblak; Pubill, Le Normand, Hancko, Grimaldo; Simeone, Barrios, Llorente, Baena; Alvarez, Lee.

Bayern Munich: Ulreich; Stanisic, Upamecano, Tah, Laimer; Kimmich, Pavlovic; Karl, Brown, Davies; Kane.

What To Expect

Atletico are likely to approach the match with their usual defensive discipline, looking to frustrate Bayern before exploiting opportunities on the counterattack.

The home side’s recent defensive record suggests they will be difficult to break down, particularly at the Wanda Metropolitano, where they have conceded just three goals in six matches this season.

Bayern, however, possess the attacking quality to trouble Atletico. Harry Kane will be central to their efforts, while the movement and creativity of their midfield could prove decisive in breaking through the hosts’ defensive structure.

The visitors will also need to manage Atletico’s transitions and avoid leaving spaces for Alvarez and Lee to exploit.

With both sides separated by just one point in the Champions League standings, Tuesday’s encounter could have an important impact on their league-phase campaigns.
