Sports, Arts, and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie has claimed that the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) are fixated on him.
His remarks came after facing criticism for allegedly spending over R800,000 during his trip to the 2024 Olympics in Paris, France.
The EFF accused McKenzie of misusing state funds for personal gain, highlighting costs of R215,976 for flights, R113,271 for accommodation, and R454,005 for transport.
They argued that these expenses were excessive for one individual. In response, McKenzie distanced himself from the trip’s logistical details, denying any misuse of funds.
He also suggested that the EFF was using his name to stay in the spotlight, stating, “They are Gayton-crazy. They’re obsessed with me.”
The EFF has reportedly filed a formal complaint with the Public Protector against Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, regarding this trip.
This follows the party’s decision to also refer McKenzie to Parliament’s Ethics Committee.
EFF MP Sinawo Tambo shared on X, formerly Twitter, that they had submitted the complaint, accusing McKenzie of “misuse of public funds and potential fraud.”
In the past, there has been tension between McKenzie and EFF leader Julius Malema.
During a heated exchange in Parliament, Malema referred to McKenzie as a “bantiti,” a slang term for an ex-convict, to which McKenzie retaliated by calling Malema a cockroach.
