Massive Loss Expected for Multichoice
MultiChoice has reported that it anticipates a massive loss for the first half of the financial year, adding to its ongoing financial challenges.
The company’s financial report for the six months ending September 2024 forecasts a projected loss of approximately R1.84 billion.
MultiChoice attributes its declining financial performance to difficult macroeconomic conditions, foreign exchange rate volatility, and weakened consumer demand in key markets, especially in Nigeria and Zambia.
In response, MultiChoice has adopted an inflation-based pricing strategy and aims to achieve R2 billion in cost savings by the end of its financial year on March 31, 2025, to counteract weakened subscriber engagement and currency pressures. The company also reported that it has already made solid progress toward these goals.
In early October, MultiChoice’s annual report revealed that over 400,000 South African subscribers canceled their DStv subscriptions, bringing the total to 7.6 million for the 2023/24 year—down from 8 million the prior year.
This trend appears to be driven by consumers seeking more affordable alternatives, such as uncapped internet and other streaming platforms like Showmax, Netflix, and Disney+.
With South Africa representing 48.5% of its active subscriber base and about 60% of its revenue, MultiChoice’s South African market remains critical to its overall performance.
