Umashi Dhlamini has told the Madlanga Commission that he personally requested to be placed on suspension after being implicated in alleged tender manipulation within the Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department (TMPD).
Dhlamini appeared before the commission on Friday, where he is facing allegations of involvement in the manipulation of procurement processes at the metro police department. Evidence presented, including WhatsApp messages, suggests he may have worked with other senior officials to influence the awarding of tenders to preferred bidders.
Suspension Instead Of Leave
Dhlamini, who leads the TMPD’s support and administration division, was placed on precautionary suspension in March with full pay. During proceedings, co commissioner Sesi Baloyi questioned why he chose suspension rather than taking leave.
In response, Dhlamini said the city does not provide for special leave in such circumstances. He explained that taking ordinary leave would have meant using up his personal leave days, which led him to request suspension instead.
Allegations Under Scrutiny
The commission continues to examine claims of corruption and tender manipulation within the department, with Dhlamini’s testimony forming part of broader efforts to establish accountability among senior officials.
