KwaZulu-Natal Hawks Colonel Deena Govender has told the Madlanga Commission that Police Minister Senzo Mchunu was allegedly behind an attempt to implicate provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi in 172 shootings.

Govender testified on Monday that Mchunu allegedly used his associate, Mavuso Ntandani, to instruct him to claim that Mkhwanazi had ordered the shootings.

According to Govender, the alleged meeting took place on August 20, with Ntandani and another individual present.

He told the commission that Mchunu was contacted by phone during the meeting and warned Govender against allowing anyone to “ruin the country”.

Govender said he had recorded the encounter and that the recording would be presented to the commission as part of his evidence.

He further told the inquiry that he recognised the voice on the call and was certain it belonged to Mchunu.

The testimony places the Police Minister at the centre of serious allegations concerning an alleged attempt to implicate Mkhwanazi in multiple shootings.

Mkhwanazi has previously been involved in a public dispute with Mchunu, while the minister has denied Govender’s allegations.

The commission is continuing to hear evidence as it investigates allegations surrounding policing, political interference and organised crime in KwaZulu-Natal.
