Meryl Maharajh, a local PhD student at the Durban University of Technology has created a world first website. www.myangelgrams.com is the only online facility currently available worldwide that allows users to store video messages and then delivers it to loved ones’ after death, permanent medical incapacitation or an unexplained disappearance. Unlike other social media sites like Facebook that links you with the living, www.myangelgrams.com reconnects you with your friends and loved ones who may have passed on. By recording and storing video messages on myangelgrams.com, users are able to leave a piece of themselves behind, to help grieving loved ones find strength and closure after a traumatic experience such as death. Users can send love, make amends, or even confess their sins in total confidence knowing that should the unexpected happen, they will still be able to reach out and comfort loved ones.

How it Works?

Designed around a stringent time delay system, users simply upload their video messages and then login to their personal accounts annually. Should you fail to login to your account for a year and then fail to respond to the systems reminder prompts, the account is then locked. The system reads your inactivity as either having:

* Passed on (Died unexpectedly/tragically/without closure) or
* Become permanently medically incapacitated (such as Alzheimer’s patients/coma) or
* An unexplained and prolonged disappearance that prevents you from contacting your loved ones (kidnapping/abductions/murder).

Stored AngelGRAMS are then released to recipients (who you have nominated) a year after your last login. Meryl Maharajh, the founder of www.myangelgrams.com had this to say, “My Dad passed away unexpectedly. He was happy and healthy the day before and the next morning an undiagnosed heart attack took his life. I felt so cheated. There were so many things left unsaid… so many regrets and regardless of the number of photos or home videos I looked at, I still longed to have that same personal connection that we once shared. I simply wanted him to look at me again… to speak to me just one last time. My greatest concern as a parent is that I will suddenly and unexpectedly die, leaving my kids and husband to face life without me. www.myangelgrams.com allows me to leave a part of myself behind. I get to say all the important things such as, I love you… I am with you…Be strong…You can do it…I believe in you…I am proud of you. An insurance policy may provide financial comfort, but my AngelGRAMS will provide all the emotional comfort my loved ones will need as they navigate life without me”.

How are AngelGRAMS different to Your Last Will and Testament, Social Media sites like FaceBook, photographs and home videos?

Your AngelGRAMS are your own personal messages that you leave directly to your beneficiaries. It is not a lawfully binding contract but rather an emotional and heartfelt farewell message. It is your final gift that will enable you to reconnect with those close to you. Home videos and photographs, however memorable it may be, merely captures a single abstract event or a memory-a snapshot. When you lose a loved one, you lose the personal connection you share and the face to face interaction of just being present in each others lives. When you receive an AngelGRAM you receive the gift of having your departed loved one, look and speak directly to you again. It is a priceless encounter!
