The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) says it is on high alert as traffic volumes begin to rise ahead of the Easter weekend, with law enforcement ramping up visibility on major routes across the country.
Officers have already been deployed along key highways, including the N3 in KwaZulu-Natal, the N1 in Limpopo and the Free State, as well as the N12 and N4.
The increased presence comes as traffic volumes are expected to surge, with early disruptions already reported. A multi-vehicle crash on the N3 in KwaZulu-Natal left more than 25 people injured, while a separate collision on the N1 near Modimolle in Limpopo on Wednesday claimed five lives.
RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane said enforcement efforts will focus on key risk areas, including public transport compliance, pedestrian safety, moving violations and drunk driving, in a bid to reduce road fatalities.
SAFETY OPERATIONS ROLLED OUT NATIONWIDE
In Gauteng, the Department of Health has launched its Easter safety campaign, while the Johannesburg Metro Police Department is preparing to implement traffic management measures in the inner city.
Changes have been introduced in the Park City precinct, where high volumes of inter-provincial and cross-border travel are expected. Several taxi operators have been temporarily relocated to manage congestion, particularly for travellers heading to Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla confirmed that officers, alongside members of the South African Police Service, will maintain a 24-hour presence to ensure safety and traffic flow.
Authorities have urged motorists to remain cautious and adhere to road rules as the busy Easter travel period gets underway.
