CAPE TOWN – The succession debate that has divided the AbaThembu clan could be finalised at the end of the month when former king Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo’s replacement is chosen.
The AmaDlomo clan will meet this month to appoint a king following Dalindyebo’s imprisonment.
The disgraced monarch is serving a 12-year jail term for ordering his subjects to be beaten and their homes to be set alight.
The royal family has met with the Traditional Affairs Department’s Director-General Charles Nwaila who is facilitating talks between factions.
Some want Dalindyebo’s son Azenathi to succeed him, while others, who have long opposed Dalindyebo’s rule, have rejected the 23-year-old’s nomination.
The department is hoping the factions would have come to an agreement before they meet later this month to select Dalindyebo’s replacement.
The appointment of a new ruler is seen as a way to unite the AbaThembu nation, which has been divided under Dalindyebo’s rule.
