Kaizer Chiefs defender, Luke Fleurs, lost his life in a car hijacking on Wednesday night in Honeydew, Johannesburg North.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, a spokesman for the Gauteng police, Fleurs was driving a red VW Golf 8 GTI into the 14th Avenue petrol station.
“The suspects pointed him with a firearm and took him out of his vehicle, then shot him once on the upper body. One suspect drove off with the victim’s car followed by his accomplice.”
Masondo stated that Fleurs was rushed to the nearest medical care facility, where he was declared dead upon arrival.
Police have already started an investigation into the murder and car hijacking, but no arrests have been made as of yet.
Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni has assigned a team of experienced detectives from the provincial office to investigate and locate the suspects.
Fleurs, 24, joined Chiefs as a free agent in October after being released by his former club, SuperSport United, in September.
He played 70 times for SuperSport, which he joined from first-division Ubuntu FC in 2018. He was named the PSL’s Young Player of the Season for 2021/22.
Kaizer Chiefs, one of the country’s most popular clubs and 12-time league champions, described his death as “tragic”.
According to the club, the case is being handled by the police, and more information will be shared in due time.
Football fans all over the country have taken to social media to mourn his passing.
South Africa is dealing with rising gun violence, with several mass shootings reported in recent years. Police data show that the country has one of the world’s highest murder rates.
