Pretoria – As tourists continue to comment on the current state of the economy, the inadequate information in the public space in regards to the expropriation of land without compensation, farm killings, political tension and an uncensored social media that ensures the right information are shared. We continue to receive opinion pieces from people around the world.
Twenty years ago I had the joy of staying in your country as a voluntary worker. A truly memorable stay, so to speak.
I read a lot of literature, but I also like news from all over the world – and I have always found South-Africa interesting. However, I am disappointed how you country has developed – or should we say; the lack of development for the common citizen, especially for the younger generation.
After apartheid, everything was supposed to improve. Yes, everybody was allowed to vote, and blacks were equal to whites, but what about everything else? I remember well a short stay in Johannesburg.
The memories consists of CCTV-systems everywhere, barbed wire fences, alarm systems and barking guard dogs. I am reading in the news that the security industry increases its profits in your country.
Call me a whimp, or say that I am exaggerating – that`s fine. But when I and many others are going on vacation, feeling safe is of high importance. If I am to use great sums of money on airplane tickets, hotel and stay, I should not need to worry about being exposed to crimes such as being robbed or beaten.
I understand that unemployment leads to more crime – but if South-Africa wishes to be visited by more tourists, your leaders have some points of improvement. Thus far, neither the current government nor the previous ones have impressed me, to put it mildly.
