Is Durban safe? Huge security blitz for SADC Summit

SHARE

DURBAN — The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) has officially activated a massive security operation in Durban ahead of the 46th Southern African Development Community (SADC) Summit. The high level regional gathering is scheduled to take place at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre from 16 to 17 August.

Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili, Chairperson of NATJOINTS, confirmed during a media briefing on Friday that law enforcement, intelligence, and emergency services have integrated their efforts to secure the event. The summit is expected to host 12 Heads of State and various international delegations, necessitating a heightened security posture across KwaZulu-Natal.

The gathering marks a significant diplomatic milestone as President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to formally assume the SADC Chairpersonship for the 2026/27 term. NATJOINTS officials stated that comprehensive plans are already in motion to maintain peace, stability, and the rule of law throughout the week long programme of technical and political engagements.

The security measures come at a critical time as South Africa prioritises public order, border security, and regional stability. Beyond physical protection for dignitaries, the summit will address pressing issues such as migration management and the unlawful employment of undocumented migrants. South Africa intends to use the platform to advocate for stricter compliance with immigration and labour legislation across the 16 member bloc.

Regional peace and security will be a focal point of the discussions, with the Organ Troika on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation scheduled to meet on 15 August. These high level talks serve as a precursor to the main summit where leaders will deliberate on agricultural transformation and critical minerals.

The summit officially opens following a week of technical meetings and a scheduled State Banquet hosted by President Ramaphosa on 16 August. NATJOINTS has indicated that further operational details regarding road closures and public safety measures will be communicated as the summit date approaches.
