South Africans could face a rainy Christmas as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued warnings of heavy rainfall across six provinces.
This announcement comes after a Level 2 warning was issued for five provinces on 18 December.
According to reports, the affected provinces include KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, North West, Gauteng, the Free State, and Mpumalanga.
The rainfall follows weeks of an intense heat wave across the country.
SAWS warns that the heavy downpours, expected to persist until next week, may lead to flooding, with thunderstorms, damaging winds, and hail posing additional risks.
Between 21 and 22 December, Gauteng, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga experienced severe rainfall that caused significant damage.
Tragically, two people lost their lives in Centurion on 21 December due to the heavy rains.
In a related development, KwaZulu-Natal experienced severe thunderstorms earlier this month.
On 4 December, SAWS issued a Level 2 warning for the province’s southern regions, which were affected by heavy rainfall following the intense heatwave.
