Veteran gospel artist Solomon Molokoane, popularly known as Solly Moholo, has passed away at age 65.
His management announced the news on Wednesday in a statement.
“It is with deep sorrow that we inform you, on behalf of the Molokoane family, that our beloved legend ‘Solly Moholo’ has passed away. Moholo died on October 2, 2024, while in the hospital. He was admitted after falling ill during his pre-album launch tour in Botswana.
“Solly Moholo will be greatly missed. May his laughter continue to resonate in heaven. Let us cherish the healing music he shared with us over the years. The family requests privacy and time to mourn the loss of Ntate Solly Moholo and to prepare for his funeral,” the statement read.
In August, his management had announced that he would soon need surgery, and earlier reports indicated that his health was improving.
The Soshanguve-born singer’s team reported that he was well-received in Botswana, but his health worsened on the way to his hotel after his performances.
In April, it was reported that Moholo and a group of musicians disappointed their fans by not showing up for a paid gig in Limpopo over the Easter weekend.
The group was booked by businessman Jeffrey Malatji to perform at Ejays Lounge in Moime village, outside Tzaneen.
However, they failed to appear without offering an apology to the fans or the businessman.
Moholo later apologised to his fans for not arriving on time at the event and promised to perform at the venue later this year.
Moholo gained fame with popular songs like “Die poppe sal dans,” “Ka letsatsi labofelo,” “Tsoha Jonase,” and many more.
Fellow gospel artists, friends, and fans have extended their condolences on social media, honoring the late gospel star.
The African National Congress (ANC) hailed Moholo as a genuine icon in South Africa’s music scene.
The family has asked for privacy and time to grieve and make arrangements for his funeral.
