Gauteng School Gr 1 & 8 Admission: Don’t Miss These Dates

SHARE

JOHANNESBURG — The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has issued an urgent advisory to parents ahead of the 2027 school admissions cycle, warning that minor administrative errors could cost children their places in the classroom. Online applications for Grade 1 and Grade 8 are scheduled to officially open at 08:00 am on Wednesday, 5 August 2026, and will remain open until midnight on 4 September 2026.

Education officials have identified 13 critical mistakes that frequently lead to delayed or rejected applications. A primary concern for the department is the misconception that creating an online profile constitutes a completed application. Parents are reminded that they must complete every stage of the process, which includes capturing residential addresses, entering learner details, and selecting between three and five schools.

Proof of residence has emerged as one of the most heavily scrutinised areas of the process. The department has intensified verification efforts to combat fraudulent applications. Officials warned that submitting false residential information will result in immediate rejection and could trigger formal investigations into fraudulent declarations. Parents are urged to ensure all supporting documents, including certified ID copies and birth certificates, are uploaded within seven school days of the online submission.

The department further clarified that learners currently enrolled in Grade R do not receive automatic entry into Grade 1. A fresh online application is mandatory for these pupils. Additionally, the online portal is strictly for Grade 1 and Grade 8 entries. Those seeking placement for Grades 2 to 7 or Grades 9 to 12 must negotiate directly with individual schools rather than using the GDE portal.

Public interest in the admissions process remains high as the department uses these early figures to allocate vital resources. Data gathered during this window determines the distribution of teachers, textbooks, learner transport, and nutrition programmes for the 2027 academic year. Authorities have also cautioned the public against admission scams, reiterating that the GDE process is entirely free and no third party can guarantee placement for a fee.

Early applications are strongly encouraged to allow sufficient time for resolving document queries or technical errors before the September deadline. The formal placement process for successful applicants is expected to begin from 15 October 2026.
