The Gauteng Department of Health has taken decisive action against payroll fraud by freezing the salaries of 66 employees who failed to verify their employment status.
This measure is a key step in the department’s Ziveze (Reveal Yourself) campaign, launched in October 2024, to eliminate ghost employees from its payroll and curb wasteful expenditure.
With a workforce of 85,642, the department is committed to ensuring that every listed employee is actively contributing to healthcare services.
MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, emphasised the need for responsible financial management, highlighting that limited resources should be directed towards legitimate employees rather than ghost workers.
She pointed out that with many healthcare professionals seeking employment and thousands relying on medical services, it is crucial to ensure that salaries are allocated appropriately. She also reaffirmed that the verification process should not be a concern for legitimate employees.
Reinforcing this stance, department spokesperson Motalatale Modiba urged all employees to verify their employment status at their local human resources offices.
“The verification process ensures that all employees are actively working, and that their records match the Department’s official staff establishment.”
As the Ziveze campaign progresses, the department has issued a stern warning to those who fail to comply.
“Those who continue to avoid the verification process risk permanent removal from the payroll, including criminal cases being opened against them,” Modiba cautioned, underscoring the department’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
Beyond tackling payroll fraud, the Ziveze campaign aims to enhance overall accountability, optimise resource allocation, and strengthen the integrity of the healthcare workforce.
By addressing these challenges, the department seeks to improve service delivery and ensure quality healthcare for all residents of Gauteng.
