The Gauteng Department of Education has instructed schools in the province to suspend food sales within and around school premises.
According to the department’s spokesperson Steven Mabona, this decision comes in response to the growing number of foodborne illness cases among students at various schools throughout the province.
Going forward, schools and school governing bodies (SGBs) will be responsible for closely overseeing food vendors, tuck shops, and other outlets selling food to learners.
Mabona emphasised that schools must ensure that only nutritious food is sold within or near school premises and that no expired or repackaged items are offered to students.
Additionally, the Department requires all individuals or businesses selling food to learners to comply with Regulation 638 of June 22, 2018, which governs food safety and quality standards.
Mabona added that all food premises and stalls must undergo inspection and receive approval before beginning operations.
“The Department is deeply concerned by how these incidents have led to both loss of life and illness among learners. In response, we are implementing immediate measures to safeguard the health and wellbeing of our learners.”
