Gauteng continues to experience heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms, prompting heightened emergency response efforts across the province. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned of ongoing storms throughout the week, increasing the risk of flash floods and other weather-related hazards.

Johannesburg Issues Orange Level 5 Warning

The City of Johannesburg has issued an Orange Level 5 warning for severe thunderstorms, prompting Emergency Management Services (EMS) to deploy Disaster Management Monitoring teams across all seven regions. These teams are prioritising vulnerable communities, particularly informal settlements at high risk of flooding.

EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi assured residents that emergency teams are fully prepared to respond.

“We are ready to respond to any emergencies, and residents are urged to call the Emergency Services Call Centre at 011 375 5911 for any life-threatening situations,” Mulaudzi said.

Authorities have also advised motorists to exercise extreme caution, urging them to avoid flooded roads, low-lying bridges, and river streams to prevent accidents.

Safety Precautions for Residents and Drivers

Severe thunderstorms are expected to affect Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and the North West, with SAWS warning of heavy rain, strong winds, hail, and excessive lightning.

Marius Kemp, Head of Personal Underwriting at Santam, stressed the importance of road safety during extreme weather conditions.

He advised drivers to reduce speed, increase following distances, and stay informed through local radio stations for weather and traffic updates. He also recommended avoiding flood-prone areas and ensuring headlights are on while avoiding the use of bright beams.

Meanwhile, EMS teams are intensifying disaster readiness efforts in communities along riverbanks and low-lying areas. The Johannesburg Aquatic Rescue Unit remains on standby to respond to any water-related emergencies.

Continued Weather Disruptions Expected

SAWS has confirmed that thunderstorms will persist throughout the week, potentially causing further disruptions. Residents are urged to stay alert, follow official warnings, and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.

As Gauteng navigates these challenging conditions, public awareness and adherence to safety guidelines remain crucial in minimising risks and protecting communities.
