The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have suffered another blow as former student command president Mpho Morolane has announced his departure from the party.
The EFF secretary general Marshal Dlamini received a letter of resignation from Morolane on Wednesday morning.
He made it clear in the letter posted to social media that he has decided to choose a different path in his political career.
His resignation has sparked speculation on social media that he may join the uMkhonto weSizwe party (MKP), as former EFF deputy president Floyd Shivambu did.
Moralane’s resignation came just days after Shivambu and Mwanele Manyi switched from the EFF to the MK party.
His exit comes after a decade of association with the party, during which he served as president of the student command.
In July of this year, he reportedly began gathering support for the party’s former spokesperson, Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, to become the EFF’s secretary general, succeeding Dlamini.
He also expressed his gratitude to the EFF for its support throughout his tenure as a leader, saying that the party will always be remembered for motivating the next generation of leaders in the fight for economic freedom.
He added that the party has provided a home to a great number of people and that it has been crucial in advocating the welfare of vulnerable workers in higher education and training facilities.
“The organisation has always felt like home however the time has come when a conscious decision has been taken by me to pursue a different path, this should not be construed as an act of public opposition but an upright move for the progressive fight to the restoration of the dignity of African people.”
