The African National Congress’s (ANC) Secretary General, Fikile Mbalula, has criticised party members who have leaked confidential documents, including communications with Gauteng ANC Chairperson Panyaza Lesufi, to the public.
Mbalula stated that such actions undermine the ANC and erode trust within the party.
Despite internal disagreements, Mbalula emphasised the importance of maintaining discipline, which includes refraining from leaking information.
He noted that the ANC is plagued by individuals who disclose its internal matters publicly, showing a lack of respect for the organisation.
During a media briefing on Tuesday, following the National Working Committee (NWC) meeting, Mbalula clarified that there was no personal conflict between him and Lesufi.
Lesufi had been called to the ANC headquarters, Luthuli House, on Monday to explain his critical comments about the Government of National Unity (GNU).
Mbalula explained that Lesufi was not summoned to face charges but to provide an explanation, which was accepted by the ANC officials.
This approach aligns with the ANC’s organisational culture of giving members a chance to explain themselves when their actions might bring the party into disrepute.
Regarding comments made by Democratic Alliance (DA) Federal Chairperson Helen Zille about the GNU, Mbalula stated that the ANC has no control over Zille’s statements.
