Fatal Shooting With ActionSA’s Xolani Khumalo at the Scene

Ekurhuleni – A police-led anti-drug operation in Ekurhuleni has come under sharp scrutiny after a 45-year-old Nigerian national was shot dead during a raid in which ActionSA’s Ekurhuleni mayoral candidate, Xolani Khumalo, was also present as part of the broader team on the ground.

Police have opened a case and confirmed an investigation is under way to determine exactly what happened, including who fired the shots and whether all actions taken at the scene were lawful. While ActionSA has described the incident as occurring during an “anti-drug operation,” reporting on the circumstances has differed, with some accounts linking the incident to filming activity connected to a drug-focused television production and alleging that members of a security team opened fire.

ActionSA has confirmed Khumalo’s presence and has framed his involvement as part of ongoing anti-drug efforts in communities affected by narcotics and organised crime. In separate public remarks referenced in local reporting, Khumalo indicated the shooting occurred during an anti-drug operation, while the party maintained that its stance remains focused on disrupting drug activity in the metro.

The incident has intensified an already heated public debate about how anti-drug operations unfold in high-risk environments, and what roles political figures and non-police participants should play when law enforcement takes the lead. For many residents, drug-related violence and intimidation have created a sense of urgency that fuels support for tougher action. At the same time, the fatal outcome is likely to raise renewed questions about oversight, the use of force, and whether operations involving multiple parties can be conducted without escalating into deadly confrontations.

The scrutiny is heightened by Khumalo’s recent legal spotlight. Earlier in 2026, he faced allegations in a separate matter linked to an anti-drug operation and was granted bail, with ActionSA publicly defending him at the time. Those proceedings remain distinct from the current shooting investigation, but they add to the wider political and public pressure surrounding his anti-crime profile.

For now, the key facts remain that the operation involved police, a man was killed by gunfire during the raid, and investigators are working through competing claims about how the shooting unfolded and who bears responsibility. Authorities have urged anyone with relevant information to assist the investigation as the case develops.
