The family of the late South African Ambassador to France, Nathi Mthethwa, is seeking clarity over the circumstances surrounding his death, as preparations are underway to repatriate his body to South Africa.
Mthethwa, aged 58, died after falling from the 22nd floor of the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Paris on 2 October 2025. The details of his death remain uncertain, and French authorities, in collaboration with South African law enforcement, are continuing their investigations.
On Friday, the acting Minister of Police, Professor Firoz Cachalia, confirmed that five senior investigators had been deployed to France to assist with the case. The delegation, led by Major General Maqhashalala, the Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Crime Detection in the Western Cape, will work alongside French officials to ensure a thorough inquiry and to support the Mthethwa family.
Speaking from the family home in Kwambonambi, relatives expressed their appreciation for the government’s efforts while calling for transparency and closure. They said they hoped the combined expertise of both investigative teams would help uncover the full truth behind the ambassador’s death.
The family also continues to grapple with the emotional impact of their loss, particularly Mthethwa’s widow, who has been receiving support from relatives during this difficult time.
Arrangements for the repatriation of his body are in progress, though some logistical challenges have caused delays. According to family members, discussions with French authorities are ongoing, and the repatriation is expected soon once the necessary post-mortem procedures are completed with the family’s consent.
Family spokesperson Sifiso Buthelezi confirmed that French police had visited the ambassador’s official residence to brief his widow and relatives on the investigation and to return his personal belongings.
