The Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool, originally scheduled to take place at Goodison Park, has been postponed due to safety concerns arising from severe weather caused by Storm Darragh.
An amber weather warning for strong winds was issued for Merseyside on Saturday morning as disruptive conditions swept across the UK.
Following discussions involving both clubs, Merseyside Police, and Liverpool City Council, the decision was made to cancel the match.
“Whilst we appreciate this will be deeply disappointing for supporters, the safety of fans, staff and players is of paramount importance,” Everton said in a statement.
Liverpool echoed this sentiment, citing “the risk to safety in the local area” as the primary reason for the postponement.
The match would have been the last league derby at Goodison Park before Everton’s planned move to their new stadium in 2025.
Liverpool currently sit at the top of the Premier League table, seven points ahead of Chelsea and Arsenal, both of whom are scheduled to play on Sunday against Tottenham and Fulham, respectively.
Meanwhile, Everton, under Sean Dyche, are 15th in the league, sitting five points clear of the relegation zone.
Storm Darragh has brought winds of up to 90 mph in some areas, prompting the Met Office to issue a red weather warning for parts of western and southern Wales.
Millions of residents in Wales and south-west England have been urged to stay indoors to avoid danger, with tens of thousands of homes left without power.
High winds have also caused significant travel disruptions across Merseyside, further contributing to the match’s postponement.
Everton assured fans that tickets purchased for the original fixture will remain valid for the rescheduled match.
The new date for the fixture and updated ticketing information will be communicated in due course.
