Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa is set to host a media briefing to outline new measures aimed at eliminating load reduction across parts of the country.
According to the Department of Electricity and Energy, the national focus is shifting from managing load shedding to stabilising localised electricity networks.
Officials note that significant progress has been made in reducing load shedding, which was introduced as a rotational measure to protect the integrity of the grid.
Attention now turns to load reduction – the deliberate cutting of power in specific areas when local networks become overloaded, particularly during peak demand.
The practice is used to prevent damage to infrastructure, especially in regions grappling with high energy losses or illegal connections that place heavy pressure on local systems.
The Minister is expected to provide details of the interventions that have been developed to end the practice and ensure greater reliability of electricity supply in affected communities.
