Pretoria – The Gauteng Department of Education has reminded parents and guardians that today is the cut-off date to apply for placement for their children in public schools across the province for the 2017 academic year.

The department on Tuesday said parents, who have not yet applied for placement for their children in public school, have until Wednesday midnight to register their children using the online learner application system by visiting www.gdeadmissions.gov.za.

“Parents or guardians who do not have access to the internet are urged to visit their nearest school or district office for assistance.

“Those who are still experiencing challenges with the online applications can contact our Call Centre on (011) 355 0000 or the toll free number 0800 000 789,” said the department.

Over 673 911 applications have been received and processed since the launch of the online application process in April.

“For Grade 1, we received 109 121 applications and 83 113 for Grade 8. The department has also recorded about 17 167 applications for learners in between the grades (Grade 2 – 7), despite the system mainly targeting Grade 1 and Grade 8 applicants,” said the department.

The department thanked parents who have registered online and for affirming their confidence in the system.

“Their show of confidence has been a great source of inspiration to the department to continue to work hard to provide modernised systems that allow us to provide quality basic education for all,” said the department.

The placement of learners will commence from 24 June until 25 July this year. During this period, schools will process learner placement online.

Parents will receive an automated SMS indicating an offer of placement.

“Letters will also be sent to parents informing them of successful and unsuccessful applications. Parents will be given a period of seven days to accept or reject placement offers.

“Parents who will not confirm acceptance or rejection of the offer will forfeit such an offer and the next parent will be placed in the available space.

“Parents who have applied after the closing date, will only be considered after all learners who applied before the 2 June 2016 have been offered placements,” said the department.
