Kinshasa – The speaker plays Kamerhe, a close friend of President Felix Shiskedi, the second-in-command of the central African country. Out of 407 members of parliament voted on Monday, 371 people voted for Kamare as president of parliament. Members of Parliament were also scheduled to vote for candidates for six other positions in the House of Commons.
The vote paves the way for Congo to name a government it has not had since the December 2023 presidential election that gave Tshisekedi a second term.
Shiskedi elected Judith Sominwa as Congo’s first female prime minister on 1 April.
The election was scheduled for May 18, but was postponed by Tshishkedi.
On May 19, Congolese security forces said they had thwarted a coup attempt and repelled an attack on Kamerhe’s house in the center of the capital, Kinshasa. Two security guards were killed in the attack, according to Cameroon spokesman Michel Mutu Mohima.
The Holy Union, the Tshishkedi coalition, has the majority in parliament, with 90 percent of the elected members of the 500-seat parliament.
Kamerha, 65, fought with Tshisekedi in the 2018 presidential election.
Kamare was previously Chief of Staff for Tshishkedi and Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs. In 2020, he was arrested in a robbery investigation.
