DURBAN — A factory owner and 15 undocumented foreign nationals were taken into custody following a high-stakes compliance raid in Chatsworth on Wednesday. The operation, which targeted several industrial sites, was part of a coordinated effort by the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Department of Employment and Labour, and the Department of Home Affairs to address illegal employment practices in the region.
Authorities confirmed that the multi-agency team inspected five factories throughout the area to verify compliance with national labour and immigration laws. During the search of one specific facility, officials identified 15 individuals whose legal status in the country was called into question. Following a rapid verification process by Home Affairs immigration officials, it was determined that all 15 were in South Africa illegally.
The owner of the factory was immediately arrested and faces charges related to the employment of undocumented foreign nationals. This enforcement action highlights a growing crackdown on business owners who bypass statutory employment regulations, often at the expense of the local labour market.
The South African Police Service in KwaZulu-Natal stated that the operation is part of a broader strategy to stamp the authority of the state within the business sector. Officials noted that lawlessness in industrial hiring practices can directly and indirectly compromise the livelihoods of South African citizens, leading to economic instability in vulnerable communities.
By integrating the expertise of labour inspectors and immigration officers, the provincial government aims to ensure that all businesses operate within the framework of the law. These inspections are expected to intensify across various districts in KwaZulu-Natal as authorities seek to eliminate unfair competition and the exploitation of undocumented workers.
The provincial commissioner’s office emphasized that these operations are ongoing and serve as a warning to other business owners who may be operating outside of legal requirements. Such raids are increasingly seen as a necessary measure to maintain order and protect the integrity of the national employment system.
