Firefighters have contained about 80% of the wildfire that has been burning in the Cederberg mountains for the past eight days.
The blaze has destroyed more than 34,000 hectares of vegetation since it broke out last Monday. Authorities said damage to property has been limited, with only a wooden cottage and a caravan at Driehoek affected. All CapeNature properties in the Cederberg remain closed as a precaution.
Firefighting Efforts And Current Hotspots
According to the West Coast Fire and Rescue Services, crews worked through the night to prevent the fire from spreading to key heritage and residential areas, including the Stadsaal Rock Art site, Oasis and Voogelfontein. These areas have since been secured, and firefighters are currently conducting mop-up operations.
Several divisions in the northern Cederberg have been fully contained and closed off. However, active fire lines remain in isolated sections, particularly around Klein Jonginskraal, Zuurvlakte and along the mountainside of Remhoogte, where the fire continues to burn downslope.
Ongoing Monitoring And Protection Measures
Structure protection remains in place for identified farms in the region, while all contained areas will continue to be closely monitored for flare-ups. Fire and rescue officials have warned that changing weather conditions could still pose a risk, despite significant progress in containment efforts.
