BMW gives South African-built X3 more power and a darker look

PRETORIA — BMW is giving its X3 M50 xDrive a performance boost and introducing a new Black Package, bringing more power and a substantially darker appearance to the flagship performance version of the X3 built at the company’s Rosslyn plant in South Africa.

The updated X3 M50 xDrive will now produce 295kW from its 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, up from 293kW, while maximum torque remains at 580Nm.

BMW says the additional output comes from technical improvements introduced to meet the Euro 7 emissions standard rather than a conventional performance upgrade.

The engine continues to use 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, with an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic transmission. BMW says the revised X3 M50 xDrive will accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 4.6 seconds.

For buyers, however, the more immediately noticeable change will be visual.

BMW is introducing a new Black Package that replaces several exterior details with high-gloss black finishes. The treatment includes the illuminated Iconic Glow kidney grille, model badging, mirror caps and exhaust tailpipes.

The package also adds 21-inch M light-alloy wheels finished in Jet Black, while red M Sport brakes provide a contrasting detail behind the wheels. BMW says customers can combine the package with the vehicle’s available exterior paint colours rather than being restricted to a black body finish.

The update matters particularly to South Africa because the current-generation BMW X3 is produced at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn outside Pretoria.

BMW invested R4.2 billion in the facility to prepare it for production of the fourth-generation X3, including the plug-in hybrid X3 30e xDrive. Production began in 2024, making Rosslyn the global production location for the plug-in hybrid derivative.

The X3 M50 xDrive sits at the performance end of the regular X3 range, using BMW’s M Performance positioning without stepping into a full BMW M model.

Its six-cylinder engine, M-specific chassis tuning, adaptive M suspension and xDrive all-wheel-drive system are intended to give it stronger performance while retaining the practicality expected from the X3.

The relatively small increase in power also illustrates a broader change confronting performance-car manufacturers. New emissions standards are forcing manufacturers to revise engines and exhaust systems while attempting to preserve, or improve, performance.

BMW says the new Euro 7-compliant exhaust system uses electrically heated catalytic converters, allowing the emissions-control system to reach operating temperature more quickly after the engine starts.

For South African buyers, the Black Package gives BMW another way of differentiating the X3 M50 xDrive in an increasingly competitive premium performance SUV market without fundamentally changing the vehicle.

The revised X3 M50 xDrive and Black Package are expected to become available in South Africa from November 2026.

That means one of the country’s most important locally produced premium vehicles is about to get a subtle mechanical update, but BMW appears to be betting that the blacked-out grille, wheels and exterior details will be what buyers notice first.
