White House Senior Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates confirmed that President Joe Biden has pledged to attend the inauguration of his successor, regardless of the election’s outcome.
“The President promised that he would attend the inauguration of whoever won the election. He and the First Lady are going to honour that promise and attend the inauguration,” Bates said.
He emphasised that Biden views this as a crucial demonstration of support for democratic values.
Donald Trump, who served as president after the 2016 election, won the November 5 presidential race, making him the first US president since the 19th century to return to the White House after a four-year gap.
The official inauguration is scheduled for January 20, 2025.
The next steps in the electoral process include the Electoral College casting votes on December 17 in alignment with the will of the voters, followed by Congress certifying the results on January 6.
