The African National Congress says its national working committee will finalise the appointment of the Premier of the North West on Wednesday, following Supra Mahumapelo’s resignation last month.

On Monday the ANC’s National Executive Committee held a special meeting in Irene outside Pretoria, over the state of its provincial structures, some of which are embroiled in court cases against the party.

These include the Eastern Cape, where members are challenging the NEC’s decision not to implement the recommendations of the Sbu Ndebele report, but instead opt for a political solution.

As well as, KwaZulu-Natal which had to abandon its provincial congress last week after members successfully, obtained an interdict against it.

ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe says, “We are finalising that tomorrow. We have a special national working committee of the ANC to process the package that we came out with from the special NEC meeting that came out yesterday. The NEC out of its own wisdom deferred certain decision to the National working committee.”

Mabe added that NEC will today meet with the Gauteng provincial deployees in preparation for the provincial conferences.

The ANC secretary-general, Ace Magashule announced that all regional conferences in Gauteng which were scheduled for this coming weekend were postponed, after hundreds of ANC members from Gauteng’s West Rand staged a picket outside the venue of the NEC in Irene, Pretoria. They were complaining about gatekeeping at branch elections, membership fraud and other issues.

“You’ve got the province deployees and our NEC deployees meeting with the relevant structures to try and understand what are the issues in province and look at the work that has been done by the provincial dispute resolution committees, to the extent that the concerns that were raised by members are being attended to, but broadly look at all the issues that have got to do with the running of conferences under conducive environment, because now and then you’ve got to be dealing with issues of people who are in court and all of that.”
