Bodi alleges cash taken during police stop, seeks R1.26m
JOHANNESBURG — Former Proteas cricketer Gulam Bodi is demanding approximately R1.26 million from the police after alleging that officers assaulted him and took cash during a roadside search.
According to IOL, his attorneys say three officers stopped him on the N14 towards Krugersdorp on 17 August. They allegedly searched him and his vehicle, took R10,600 and a power bank, and used physical force against him. The allegations have not been established by a court.
SN Mnguni Attorneys issued a letter of demand dated 7 October, allowing 30 days for compliance before threatened High Court proceedings. The provisional claim totals R1,261,600: R10,600 in cash, R1,000 for the power bank, R250,000 for assessment and treatment, and R1 million in general damages.
The attorneys also want an explanation for the search and the delay in registering Bodi’s complaint, which they say was recorded at Kagiso police station on 22 September.
Police ministry spokesperson Kamogelo Mogotsi told IOL that legal services would assess the merits and advise the minister. The reported response did not address the individual allegations. The demand is a claim for compensation, not a court award.
