Uganda’s First Lady: We cannot keep waiting for foreign investors
KAMPALA — Uganda’s First Lady Janet Museveni has praised businessman Hamis Kiggundu for the redevelopment of Nakivubo Stadium, saying Africans should take greater responsibility for developing their countries rather than waiting for foreign investors.
Museveni, who is also Uganda’s Minister of Education and Sports, made the remarks during an inspection of the redeveloped Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium in Kampala.
She described the project as an example of young Ugandans contributing directly to the country’s development and argued that foreign countries could not be expected to prioritise Uganda’s needs ahead of their own.
The redevelopment transformed the historic Kampala stadium into a modern sporting facility and became part of Uganda’s broader push to improve its sports infrastructure.
President Yoweri Museveni later commissioned the redeveloped stadium and thanked Kiggundu for investing in the government-owned facility, which was developed through a long-term public-private arrangement.
The stadium has taken on greater significance as Uganda prepares alongside Kenya and Tanzania to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
Beyond football, Museveni’s remarks raised a wider question facing African economies: whether more of the continent’s infrastructure can be financed and developed by African businesses rather than depending heavily on foreign capital.
