CAPE TOWN – The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in the Western Cape says it’s well equipped, to ensure a safe voting process in areas notorious for gang violence.
Over the past few weeks, gang violence has once again flared up and even though residents say they fear for their lives, they will take the risk of going out to vote come the third of August.
The commission says it’s working with security agencies.
“The IEC does not work alone, we must understand that. There are security structures. There will be policing at each of the voting stations as we have always had during election time,” said Courtney Sampson, IEC Western Cape Electoral Officer.
These kind of situations are part of the natural cause of events in planning an election. You can’t plan an elections without making sure that you’ve look at the security situation and we’ve done that in the Western Cape,” said Sampson.
Police are still investigating the circumstances around the latest shootings.
