South Africa has renewed its call for the peaceful resolution of global conflicts in line with the United Nations Charter, urging countries to recommit to multilateralism amid rising geopolitical tensions.
Speaking at the UN Country Team Annual Retreat in Pretoria, Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Alvin Botes emphasised that the UN Charter remains central to global governance.
He called on nations to resolve disputes through negotiation, mediation, arbitration and other peaceful mechanisms rather than military action.
Botes warned that conflicts cannot be resolved through force alone and cautioned against unilateral actions that bypass international law.
He raised concerns about escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly the risk of further regional instability and its potential impact on global economic conditions, energy security and key shipping routes.
He also highlighted the importance of multilateralism for countries in the Global South, describing it as essential for ensuring fairness and sovereign equality.
According to Botes, international cooperation must become more inclusive and responsive to the needs of developing nations.
South Africa has maintained a firm position on the conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States, condemning strikes on Iranian territory and warning that such actions undermine international law and regional stability.
The government has repeatedly called for restraint and encouraged all parties to pursue diplomatic solutions through the United Nations framework. It has also cautioned that further escalation could have serious humanitarian and global security consequences.
Pretoria continues to advocate for adherence to international law, including through its case against Israel at the International Court of Justice, while urging all parties involved in the conflict to avoid targeting civilians and critical infrastructure.
