A driver for Golden Arrow Bus Services was injured after protesters allegedly stoned and set alight the bus he was operating in Mfuleni.
South African Police Service Public Order Police were deployed to the area shortly before 6am on Friday after a violent protest erupted.
Authorities have since opened a case of malicious damage to property.
Tensions escalated as a group of residents took to the streets in protest, reportedly angered by the deployment of a private security company and the demolition of informal homes in the area.
Some residents also accused the security officers of using heavy handed tactics to maintain order and claimed that their concerns had not been addressed by the local ward councillor.
Golden Arrow Bus Services has condemned the torching of the bus and the violence that left the driver injured.
