The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has announced that the first voter registration weekend ahead of the upcoming local government elections will take place on 20 and 21 June.
The announcement was made during a media briefing at the commission’s headquarters in Centurion on Tuesday.
Although the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs has not yet confirmed the official date for the municipal elections, the IEC says it is preparing to be ready by November.
The current term of all municipal councils is scheduled to end on 2 November 2026. In terms of the law, local government elections must be held within 90 days after the expiry of the councils’ term.
This means the elections will need to take place between November and February.
In preparation, IEC Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo said the commission will begin its voter registration process with the June weekend initiative.
Mamabolo explained that the registration weekend forms part of the commission’s planning to ensure it is ready to conduct the elections once the official date is announced.
Once the election date is formally proclaimed, eligible voters will still be able to register until 5pm on the same day.
