CAPE TOWN — High-profile forensic investigator Paul O’Sullivan has issued a formal apology to National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza and Parliament following a heated confrontation during a committee hearing last week. O’Sullivan returned to the witness stand on Thursday to conclude his testimony before the ad hoc committee on police, following an incident where he abruptly stormed out of proceedings while being questioned by evidence leaders.
Before continuing his testimony, O’Sullivan submitted an affidavit and offered an official apology for his previous walkout. This appearance marks a critical phase in the investigation into allegations regarding his conduct and his reported infiltration of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID). The committee further compelled O’Sullivan to apologize for disclosing the confidential financial information of committee member David Skosana during earlier proceedings.
The inquiry has now shifted focus toward the alleged interference in IPID investigations by O’Sullivan and his associates. On Thursday, his former assistant, Sarah Jane Trent, was also scheduled to provide evidence. Trent faces serious allegations including the impersonation of an IPID official and general interference in the oversight body’s independent mandate.
The proceedings underscore deep concerns regarding the integrity of South Africa’s law enforcement oversight mechanisms. The committee is examining the extent to which private individuals and investigators may have gained unauthorized influence over IPID, an institution designed to hold the South African Police Service accountable.
The outcome of this investigation is expected to have significant implications for how Parliament manages the relationship between private forensic entities and state investigative bodies. The ad hoc committee continues to scrutinize the evidence to determine if legislative protocols were breached or if criminal conduct occurred during the interactions between O’Sullivan’s team and IPID officials.
