Christmas Eve is set to bring varied weather conditions across South Africa, as summer thunderstorms become active over much of the country, according to the South African Weather Service.

The most unstable conditions are expected across the central and eastern interior, where scattered to widespread showers and thunderstorms are forecast.

Rainfall probabilities increase to about 60% in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal, with storms likely to intensify at times.

Residents in these regions are advised to be cautious, as heavy rainfall, frequent lightning and possible hail could occur.

These conditions raise the risk of localised flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and busy urban centres.

More isolated thunderstorm activity is expected over parts of the central interior, including sections of the Northern Cape and the Free State, where rain chances are closer to 30%.

While rainfall in these areas will be less widespread, some storms may still bring brief heavy showers and gusty winds during the afternoon and evening.

Calmer conditions are forecast along the south coast and in parts of the Western Cape, although light showers remain possible at times. Rainfall probabilities here also sit at around 30%.

Coastal areas, especially along the southwestern coastline, may experience fresh to strong winds, which could result in temporarily rough sea conditions for small vessels.

Meanwhile, much of the western interior is expected to remain dry, with no significant rainfall anticipated.

Temperatures across the country will remain seasonally warm to hot, easing slightly in areas affected by cloud cover and rainfall.
