A powerful cold front has swept across South Africa, bringing snow, freezing temperatures, and hazardous conditions to multiple regions. Disaster management authorities have issued stern warnings that the weather could become deadly if communities are not adequately prepared.
In the Eastern Cape, heavy snowfall and fatal accidents have forced the closure of key roads including the N10 between Cookhouse and Cradock and the N2 near East London. Severe snowfall has also led to the closure of the N2 highway in southern KwaZulu-Natal.
This winter storm has revealed weaknesses in the country’s infrastructure and exposed many communities to significant risks. From icy mountain passes in the Eastern Cape to power surges in Gauteng, the impact has been widespread. Johannesburg has recorded temperatures below zero, with City Power reporting that the increased use of heaters and geysers is putting extreme strain on the electricity grid.
The Eastern Cape weather office has upgraded its alert to level 9, warning of widespread flooding, snowfall, and freezing temperatures. These harsh conditions are expected to persist until Thursday.
Officials are advising residents to stay indoors whenever possible, avoid using open flames, and keep up to date with weather alerts as the country faces this intense cold snap.
