The City of Ekurhuleni has projected that electricity will be fully restored to the Kempton Park CBD and nearby areas by 6 pm on Wednesday. This follows a major power outage caused by cable theft, which left parts of the area without electricity on Tuesday.
Municipal technicians have been working to restore supply, but their efforts have been hampered by Eskom’s implementation of stage 2 loadshedding. The scheduled power cuts, which began on Tuesday, are expected to continue through Thursday, further complicating repair timelines.
In northern Johannesburg, power has been restored to several suburbs including Rosebank, Dunkeld, Parkwood, and Hyde Park. The outage occurred on Tuesday night following a post-loadshedding trip at the Rosebank substation.
City Power explained that the disruption was linked to low levels of sulphur hexafluoride gas, which is essential for insulating high-voltage circuit breakers and preventing electrical faults. The gas helps maintain the stability of switchgear systems, and a shortage can lead to power interruptions such as the one experienced.
Technicians continue to monitor the infrastructure to prevent further issues as loadshedding persists across various regions.
