As the UEFA Champions League semi-finals approach, Arsenal will aim to build on their stunning elimination of Real Madrid by securing a decisive first-leg victory over Paris Saint-Germain, while Barcelona look to halt Inter Milan’s momentum and move closer to a long-awaited return to European glory.

Arsenal vs Paris Saint-Germain (21:00 SAST)

After overcoming Real Madrid with back-to-back wins, Arsenal are determined to maintain their impressive form as they host Paris Saint-Germain at the Emirates Stadium in the first leg of their semi-final clash. With their Premier League title hopes dashed by Liverpool, the Gunners are now fully focused on lifting the Champions League trophy for the first time in their history.

Mikel Arteta’s men enter this tie on the back of a commanding 3-0 home win and a 2-1 victory away to Madrid in the previous round. Arteta described the triumph as “one of the best nights” of his career, while midfielder Declan Rice spoke confidently of a bright future for the club, highlighting the growing influence of young talents such as Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri.

Paris, meanwhile, are seeking to reach only their second Champions League final after falling short against Bayern Munich in 2020. Under Luis Enrique, the French champions have already eliminated Liverpool and Aston Villa and are now targeting a third consecutive English scalp. Reflecting on their earlier 2-0 defeat to Arsenal during the group stage, Enrique admitted his side struggled but insists they have since made significant progress.

History, however, favours Arsenal: Paris have yet to beat the Gunners in five competitive encounters (three draws, two defeats), including a semi-final meeting in the 1993/94 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, when Arsenal advanced with a 2-1 aggregate win.

Barcelona vs Inter Milan (21:00 SAST)

Barcelona’s quest to reclaim their former European dominance continues as they prepare to host Inter Milan in the first leg of their semi-final. The Catalan giants, led by new manager Hansi Flick, have returned to the Champions League’s last four for the first time since 2018/19.

An exciting young squad, complemented by seasoned stars like Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha, gives fans hope of a long-overdue triumph — their last Champions League title came in 2014/15.

Barcelona dispatched Borussia Dortmund with relative ease in the quarter-finals, but Flick remains cautious, noting that despite their progress, the journey is far from complete.

Historically, Barcelona have had the upper hand against Inter in their 12 previous meetings (six wins, four draws, two defeats). However, Inter famously prevailed over Barcelona in the 2009/10 semi-finals under José Mourinho before going on to lift the trophy.

Current Inter coach Simone Inzaghi has instilled a similar steely resilience in his side. Despite scoring fewer goals than Barcelona (19 to 37), Inter’s watertight defence — conceding just five goals throughout the tournament — has been pivotal.

Lautaro Martínez, in sensational form, has scored in his last five Champions League matches and recently became the first player to net over 20 goals for Inter in Europe’s premier competition.

Anticipating the clash, Martínez acknowledged Barcelona’s rich history but insisted his team must focus on writing their own.

England to Secure a Fifth Champions League Spot

Following Arsenal’s victory over Real Madrid, England have guaranteed a fifth berth in next season’s Champions League by topping UEFA’s coefficient rankings. This means the top five Premier League teams will automatically qualify.

Additionally, there is a slim chance of up to seven English clubs participating if Arsenal were to win the Champions League but finish outside the top five, and if Manchester United or Tottenham claim the Europa League title.

Meanwhile, the second bonus Champions League spot will likely go to Italy’s Serie A or Spain’s La Liga, with Germany’s Bundesliga still holding an outside chance.
