The South African Weather Service (Saws) has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall expected to affect several parts of the country on Wednesday.
The warning applies to the North West, Gauteng, northern Free State, the Mpumalanga Highveld, the extreme southern parts of Limpopo, and both the coastal areas and nearby inland regions of KwaZulu-Natal.
Residents in these regions are advised to prepare for strong, damaging winds and intense lightning, which may cause localised flooding and property damage. Saws also cautioned that roads and low-lying bridges could become impassable due to fast-rising water levels.
In the north-eastern areas of KwaZulu-Natal, conditions are expected to be hot and uncomfortable, despite the rain. Scattered showers and thunderstorms could further impact infrastructure in the affected regions.
Looking ahead, Saws predicts isolated showers and thunderstorms over the eastern parts of the country and along the southern coast on Thursday and Friday.
This latest warning follows heavy rainfall in parts of the Western Cape on Tuesday. The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Roberto Quintas, confirmed that multiple roadways were flooded.
According to Quintas, the City received numerous reports of flooding in areas including the Elsieskraal River in Pinelands, Liesbeek River near the N2, Langa, Vygieskraal, Fish Hoek, Parow Industria, Table View, and Tygervalley.
